DSBN Teacher in the “Business” of Student Learning

Congratulations to A.N. Myer Secondary School Teacher Andrea Wiggins, who is this year’s DSBN recipient of the Lincoln Fabrics Ltd Annual Teacher Award. Andrea was presented with the award at the Business Education Council of Niagara’s Annual Partners Breakfast Friday morning in Niagara Falls. The award recognizes educators who best demonstrate a responsible role in the achievement of school-community collaboration. For winning the award, A.N. Myer will receive $500.

Andrea is the Head of Business at A.N. Myer, and the Co-Chair of the Business Heads Council for the District School Board of Niagara. “Andrea is a dedicated educator who continually reaches out to partner with the community and local business to enhance the learning experience for her students,” says John Stainsby, Superintendent of Secondary Schools. “She is very deserving of this recognition.”

Under Andrea’s leadership, A.N. Myer has developed relationships with the Niagara Falls Rotary Club, Niagara College, Brock University and the Niagara Falls Small Business Enterprise Centre.

In addition, with Andrea’s support, the Business Club at A.N. Myer started “The Fair Cup”. It is a student based coffee stop where students sell fair trade coffee, tea and hot chocolate to students and staff at the school. “This provides students with important real-world business experience,” says Cheryl Mancuso, Principal, A.N. Myer. “Students oversee the entire operation, from marketing to accounting, purchasing and staffing.”

The Business Education Council of Niagara is a non-profit corporation that initiates active communication and partnership between business, education, government, and community organizations to address challenges in Niagara.
