Students Study Darfur
DSBN students will be getting an in-depth look at the ongoing crisis in Darfur when they meet with ‘Me to We’ speakers Caustan De Riggs and Angela Wallace next week.
On Tuesday, February 24, the Darfur Now speaking tour will touch down at NDSS in Niagara on the Lake and Laura Secord Secondary in St. Catharines. On Wednesday, De Riggs and Wallace will travel to E.L. Crossley Secondary School in Fonthill.
According to the Me to We speakers website “Caustan and Angela bring light to the tragedy in Sudan through an hour-long presentation, and will show students how the actions of one person can make a difference to millions.” Students will also view excerpts from the film Darfur Now.
After watching the presentation, students will return to the classroom for a discussion about the presentation and to identify ways that they can make a difference for those living in Darfur. In addition, 30 students will be selected to meet in a small group with Caustan and Angela to create an action plan filled with practical suggestions on how they can create powerful change, both in their community and across the globe.
“Through the various fundraisers and volunteer work they do throughout the year, our students show a great deal of caring and concern for our local community,” says Susan Jackson, Vice-Principal, NDSS. “Having the opportunity to work with Caustan and Angela will also help students learn how to expand their efforts to reach people beyond our borders.”
Me to We works closely with its charity partner Free The Children, empowering youth to take action in their schools and communities. For more information, please visit www.metowe.com/speakers/darfurnow/.
