Parental Involvement Benefits Students
Whether by reading a book together in the evening, helping their children with homework or talking about current events, there is no doubt that parents play a huge role in their children’s education and understanding of the world.
Another way that parents make significant contributions to education is through their participation on school councils. To support parents in their efforts to boost student learning, the Ministry of Education created the “Parents Reaching Out” (PRO) grants for school councils.
In March, the Ministry announced that 26 school councils would receive more than $18,000 to support the development and implementation of various literacy initiatives, parent engagement projects and transition programs for Grade 9 students.
Warren Hoshizaki, Director of Education for the DSBN was encouraged by the announcement. “When parents work together as partners with the school and engage in their child’s education, it has a profound, positive effect on their learning,” said Hoshizaki.
The following is a list of the schools and school councils that received PRO funding.
