2009/10 DSBN School Year to Begin After Labour Day
At a special meeting of the Board on Tuesday, March 31, trustees passed a draft school year calendar for 2009/10. Upon approval from the Ministry of Education, the first day of school for 2009 will be on September 8.
At the request of the Board, the School Year Calendar Committee revisited the previous calendar submitted to the Ministry. “At the Board, we value our partnerships with parents, the community and local business. Trustees recognize that, especially during these economic tough times, an early start to the school year could have an adverse impact on families and our local tourism industry. This new calendar represents a concerted effort by board staff and trustees that will benefit students, their families and industry,” said Marcy Heit, Board Vice-Chair.
“We are pleased to have created a calendar that both meets the educational needs of students and the wishes of our community,” said Marilyn Hyatt, Superintendent of Schools and School Calendar Committee Chair.
“The Committee was very diligent in its efforts to reach out to the community to determine the optimal start date for the upcoming school year,” said Hyatt. “We appreciate everyone who took the time to share their comments and participate in this important process.”
The draft calendar will be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval. When the Ministry signs off on the final version, the 2009/10 school year calendars will be posted on the Board website (dsbn.org), school websites, and distributed through school newsletters.
