Niagara Elementary Choral Music Festival is Music to the Ears

The halls of St. Catharines Collegiate will be filled with music as elementary students from across the DSBN take part in the Niagara Elementary Choral Music Festival from April 1 to 3. This year’s Festival showcases the talents and abilities more than 1,600 students.

Choirs will perform one test piece, and another selection of their choosing. DSBN Arts Consultant Gerda Klassen says songs performed will range from the very contemporary to classical pieces.

“Studying music benefits children in a number of ways,” adds Klassen. “While it helps students gain an understanding and appreciation of the arts, music education also helps children develop math skills. Students learn to count, multiply and divide to figure out how long notes are.”

In addition to showcasing the talents of elementary students, the Festival provides teachers with the opportunity to learn and share conducting and staging techniques with their peers.
