Awards Banquet Celebrates Tech Students

On Wednesday, April 15, the District School Board of Niagara will celebrate the skills and talents of students who took part in the 2009 Technology Skills Challenges.

The seventh annual Awards Banquet, held at Club Italia in Niagara Falls, will recognize the 147 students who earned medals, the 700 challengers and the near 4,000 students who took part in events leading up to February’s Tech Challenges.

Each September, students and teachers begin their preparations to compete in and host some of the 30 elementary and secondary competitions. Students practice and prepare in class, but will regularly put in extra time honing their skills outside of classroom hours. “Tech Tuesdays” are organized by teachers and community/industry partners as after school sessions where students go beyond the classroom to work with professional advisers and develop new skills.

DSBN Skills Development Coordinator Mike Doyle attributes the success of the Technology Challenges to the "dedication and enthusiasm of students who put in the necessary time and effort to succeed in their chosen field. We also appreciate the support of our community and industry partners who offer our students their time, expertise and constructive feedback."

Gold medalists from each of the DSBN regional challenges will advance to the provincial level competitions, held from May 4-6 at RIM Park and Manulife Financial Sportsplex in Waterloo.
