Stamford Wins Yearbook Award

Usually, yearbooks are used to remind students of their treasured memories of high school, but, at Stamford Collegiate, the yearbook itself is also quite memorable.

Recently, Mike Tomlinson from Canada Yearbook Services (CYS) visited the school to present the staff and students with the Southern Ontario Yearbook of the Year award. CYS reviewed the Niagara Falls school’s 2007/2008 yearbook along with more than one hundred other editions from schools across the region and awarded Stamford with the Yearbook Excellence Award.

The award recognizes the book’s unique layout, colour and imagery.

One area in particular that impressed CYS officials was the yearbook’s graduate section. “We decided to do something different that year,” said Rory Montgomery, Stamford Teacher. “Instead of the traditional photo of students in their cap and gown, we took pictures of students dressed casually and then cropped them out holding their own grad photos. It certainly required more time and effort than in years past, but our students were very pleased with the final product.”

For Montgomery and a team of three students in grades 10, 11 and 12, producing the yearbook has definitely been a labour of love. In September, the team began its work in earnest and often spent many long hours and late nights gathering information, taking pictures and preparing the book’s layout. “Stamford is a dynamic school and we wanted to provide full coverage of all the unique events that took place during the year,” said Montgomery.

Principal Marc Blouin also expressed his appreciation to Montgomery and his team of dedicated students for all the time and effort they put into the yearbook. “The yearbook was well received by everyone; I even had calls from parents who said they were very impressed by the design and layout of the 07/08 edition.”

“This yearbook will be a showpiece for students for years to come as they look back fondly on their time at Stamford,” said Blouin.
