Port Weller Opens Outdoor Classroom

Outdoor ClassroomWhen weather starts to get warmer and the sun begins to shine, students’ thoughts often turn to the outdoors. On especially nice days, students at Port Weller Public School will be able to combine their love for learning and nature at the school’s outdoor classroom.

Principal Sherry Storrey-Perchaluk says the new classroom will allow students to “move beyond the four walls of the traditional classroom, to inspire creative learning in a more natural setting,”

Port Weller Vice-Principal Michael McLean adds that the classroom will be used for a variety of different lessons and activities. “In addition to being a great spot for students to read and work in a beautiful setting, this classroom also reflects the DSBN’s focus on environmental education. Being able to learn outdoors offers students an opportunity to connect with the natural environment and talk about the surrounding ecosystem,” says McLean.

Last week, the school celebrated its unique new facilities with an official ribbon cutting. Although the weather wasn’t very cooperative, students, parents, school and Board officials were all smiles as they huddled under their umbrellas during the opening ceremony.

The project began in June, 2008 as an initiative by Port Weller’s Parent Council. “Under the leadership of Chair Patti Maartense, our Parent Council raised all the necessary funds to complete this project. It is a wonderful example of how parents and schools can work together to provide students with enhanced learning opportunities,” said Storrey-Perchaluk.
