Governor Simcoe Students Support the Fight Against Cancer

The Gift - CastPlaywright Kendall Marlowe’s “The Gift” is a touching story about one women’s struggle with cancer, as seen through the eyes of her 16 year old daughter. On Thursday, May 21, students at Governor Simcoe Secondary in St. Catharines will present a special production of “The Gift” in order to raise funds to support local cancer patients and their families. All money raised during the performance will be donated to the Rankin Cancer Run taking place on May 23.

Grade 12 student Ben Anikejew, who portrays the role of family patriarch, says the play delivers a very poignant message. “Sadly, cancer has touched far too many people’s lives. This play really emphasizes the need for everyone to take care of themselves, their loved ones and to never take anything for granted,” says Anikejew.

“Even in our school, there are so many stories of how cancer has affected students’ families. It really drives home how important this initiative is. We’re all very pleased to do our part to raise money to support people in Niagara,” adds Anikejew.

Director Rassika Malhotra-Risko says the play “has several strong monologues and two-person scenes. Our students are really putting a tremendous amount of work into preparations and I believe that effort will be very apparent once the curtain rises on May 21.”
