DSBN's Student Scientists to Showcase Environmental Research in Africa

This summer, two student scientists at the District School Board of Niagara will travel across the globe to present their innovative research on environmental issues to the world.

After a strong showing at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, Sir Winston Churchill’s Bindu Kovvuru (Grade 12) and Supritha Nilam (Grade 11) earned the opportunity to display their work alongside the brightest young scientific minds in the world at the international science fair in Tunis, Tunisia.

Bindu was asked to participate in the international fair based on the strength of her project “Phytoremediation: Using geraniums as hyper accumulators in phytoextracting lead from our environment”. At the national science fair, Bindu was awarded the Canadian Stockholm Junior Water Prize, as well as an Honourable Mention in the Environmental Innovation category.

Supritha’s project “Anti-Oxidants and Plant Dynamics – Part 2: From Lab to Land”, is a follow-up to her 2008 project, that won a bronze medal at last year’s Canada-Wide Science Fair. In addition to earning an invite to Tunisia, Supritha won the Manning Innovation Achievement Award, the Manning Young Canadian Innovation Award and an Honourable Mention in the Environmental Innovation category.

The Expo-Sciences Internationale is a biennial event where young people from around the world share their passion for science. The Expo is not a competition, but an opportunity for students to network and exchange thoughts, ideas and perspectives on science. This year’s fair will take place from July 23 – 29.
