Law and Order: DSBN

Twenty-four DSBN students will have their day in court later this week.

On Thursday, June 4, grade 11 and 12 law students from four DSBN schools will be gathering at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines to participate in the fifth annual District School Board of Niagara Mock Trial tournament.

“Participating in this event is an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about how our country’s justice system operates,” says Westlane teacher Marita Bootsma, who is coordinating this year’s tournament. “It will help students develop important research, strategy, advocacy and presentation skills that will benefit them no matter what career they decide to pursue."

Organized in teams of six, students from Governor Simcoe, Grimsby Secondary, Port Colborne High and Westlane Secondary have been preparing to argue a case as lawyers and witnesses for either the prosecution or defence. The mock scenario is designed each year by the Ontario Bar Association. This year’s case surrounds a radio DJ who is charged with inciting hatred after listeners to his show attack a fictional group of people.

Five lawyers (Crown attorneys, criminal defence and civil litigators) are volunteering their time to act as judges for the tournament. “We are very fortunate to have the support of our local legal community. Having the benefit of their expertise, advice and experience will make this a much more authentic and rewarding exercise for students,” says Bootsma.

Students will be evaluated based on the strength of their arguments, legal strategy and ability to effectively cross-examine witnesses. The winning team will be awarded a $600 bursary. The tournament is being supported by a grant from the Ontario Justice Education Network.
