EA Honoured for Dedication to Students
Years after they leave school, students often fondly recall the teacher or school staff member who made the greatest impact on their lives. The one who made them believe they could achieve great things, even when they had doubts. For many students at Jordan Public School, that person will be Vanessa ‘Fay’ Jeffcoate.
At the Board meeting on Monday, June 22, the District School Board of Niagara and CUPE Local 4156 presented Fay Jeffcoate with the prestigious Joan Crowe Award. The award is given annually to an Educational Assistant (EA) or Child Care Worker at the DSBN who demonstrates outstanding commitment to their profession and the students they serve.
Fay’s colleague Blair Jenzen nominated her for the award and says Fay’s constant support means the world to the students she works with. “When I think of the impact Fay makes, one student in particular comes to mind. Having worked with Fay, this student is experiencing the best year of his school career. He is happy and enjoying school for the first time. Thanks to Fay’s encouragement and support he feels safe and confident to try new things and begin exploring his potential. He is absolutely thriving and we couldn’t be happier,” says Jenzen.
“Joan Crowe left an indelible mark on all those she worked with, and it’s clear that Fay is also making a tremendous contribution to the lives of her students. She is a very deserving recipient of this award,” says Frank Ventresca, President, CUPE local 4156.
Joan Crowe started as the first Educational Assistant with the former Niagara South Board of Education in 1974. Throughout her career she supported students with her kind, generous and gentle approach. Joan retired from the Board in June 2001 and passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in February of 2002.
