Recently you may have seen media reports or expressions of concern regarding the use of wireless technology within schools and public buildings.

The District School Board would like to take the opportunity to assure all our school community partners – students, staff, parents, volunteers and community members – that student safety is, and always will be, our first priority as a school board.

As educators, our responsibility to improve the lives of the students in our care is unquestioned and forms the core of our decision making.

As you can understand, in areas of public health we rely on the guidance and direction established by experts in the field. In this case, Health Canada, the World Health Organization, and provincial health authorities have all concluded that the use of wireless technology does not pose a public health risk.

Most recently, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Arlene King, and the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion have confirmed the safety of this technology. A presentation by Dr. Rosana Pellizzari, Medical Officer of Health, Peterborough County-City Health Unit, was shared with our CIO last week which further endorses the safety of wireless networks within public institutions. As well, the CIO association of Canada will be hosting an online E-seminar on Wifi Safety with Public Health experts later this month.
